History of 5.56×45 Ammo
The 5.56x45mm NATO, commonly referred to as the 5.56 NATO, is a cornerstone among military cartridges. Since its debut in 1964, it has become an indispensable part of the United States Armed Forces’ weaponry.
This cartridge is distinguished by its rimless, tapered bottleneck design. Its casing stretches 44.70mm (1.76 inches) in length, narrowing from a 9.58mm base diameter to a 6.43mm neck diameter. It houses a boat-tailed bullet with a diameter of 5.70mm, or .224 inch, culminating in a total cartridge length of 57.40mm (2.26 inches).
The original 5.56x45mm configuration consisted of a 55-grain (gr) lead bullet, but it has since evolved. Today’s standard is a 62-gr bullet with a lead core and a steel penetrator tip, a change that significantly boosts the bullet’s speed and penetrating power, markedly enhancing its performance.
The cartridge employs a small rifle primer for ignition. The Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute (SAAMI) specifies its maximum pressure range between 55,000 and 58,000 pounds per square inch (psi), with some variations designed to endure up to 62,000 psi.
Though initially conceived for military purposes, the 5.56x45mm NATO has found a second life in the civilian realm in the United States, especially among fans of military-style semi-automatic carbines. Its adaptability and superior performance have solidified its popularity among American firearm enthusiasts.
