SST’s own analysis of a 13-member Marine Rifle Squad scenario, rushing 100 meters of rough desert terrain against a defensive position, modeled what a 30 percent reduction in ammunition weight can do at the squad level. Based on more than 885,000 simulations, that weight reduction was projected to lower squad casualties from 8.9 to 3.5 in that engagement. Lighter ammo doesn’t just make a march easier. It changes the math of who comes home.

What 30 Percent Looks Like in the Real World

The Black Hawk is one of the clearest case studies. A standard ammunition loadout, approximately 7,000 rounds of 7.62mm and 1,200 rounds of .50 caliber, weighs roughly 1,022 pounds when loaded in traditional brass with standard M13 links. With SST’s NAS³ cases and lightweight ammo belt links, that same loadout drops to 723 pounds. That’s a 299-pound reduction, or, held to the original payload ceiling, over 4,500 additional rounds in the aircraft.

The same principle scales through the entire logistics chain:

  • Ground transport: Traditional .50 caliber ammo runs about 10 pallets per vehicle. Lighter ammunition pushes that to 14 — effectively eliminating every fourth vehicle in a convoy. Fewer shipments. Less fuel. Less convoy exposure.
  • Aircraft missions: A 30 percent weight reduction in ammunition payload translates to a 9–15 percent reduction in fuel costs per mission. Aircraft stay on station longer and extend their range.
  • Storage and handling: SST’s prototype Collapsible Lightweight Ammo Can (CLAC) drops a fully loaded 100-round belt can from 35 pounds to roughly 26 — and is reusable and recyclable.

 The .338 Lapua NAS³ case is approximately 30 percent lighter than brass and delivers roughly 11 percent more internal volume, translating to standard-bullet velocities reported up to approximately 3,125 feet per second at standard SAAMI pressures. Match-grade dimensional consistency supports the tight velocity spreads required for sub-MOA accuracy at extended distance.
